A decade ago, China entered the region of Central and Eastern Europe and established the so-called ‘16+1 format’. The arrival of the new power was initially met with enthusiasm from the local political and economic elites, who perceived China as an economic alternative to western markets. However, the expectations have not fully materialized. There is increasing concern with the lack of tangible results, while counterintelligence services in CEE countries warn of China’s growing influence on domestic politics.
The talk will focus on the changing perception and narratives in connection to China in Central and Eastern Europe and the future of the ’16+1′ format.
