SUMMARY:FCCC In-person Event. China\, Russia\, and North Korea: Strategic Alignments in a Shifting World
DESCRIPTION:A new world order also rises in the East. Russia’s growing isolation following its invasion of Ukraine has pushed it into an unprecedented alliance with North Korea\, deepening ties not seen since the Cold War. This cooperation now extends beyond diplomatic rhetoric to a mutual defense treaty\, arms transfers\, and even the deployment of North Korean soldiers to the battlefield. The implications of this newfound closeness are particularly significant for China\, which has long maintained a dominant role as Pyongyang’s primary link to the outside world. As North Korea strengthens its ties with Moscow\, Beijing faces a changing regional landscape that could reshape power dynamics across Northeast Asia. This event will explore the strategic consequences of this evolving trilateral relationship and its broader impact on global geopolitics. \nAbout the Speaker: Ramon Pacheco Pardo is Professor of International Relations at King’s College London and the KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Brussels School of Governance of Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, amongst other positions. His publications include the books North Korea: Survival of a Political Dynasty (Agenda Publishing\, 2024)\, Korea: A New History of South & North (Yale University Press\, 2023; with Victor Cha)\, South Korea’s Grand Strategy: Making Its Own Destiny (Columbia University Press\, 2023)\, Shrimp to Whale: South Korea from the Forgotten War to K-Pop (Hurst and Oxford University Press\, 2022) and North Korea-US Relations from Kim Jong Il to Kim Jong Un (Routledge\, 2019).

SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk. China and the Trump tariffs: Where is the economy heading?
DESCRIPTION:The US government has imposed tariffs of 145 % on almost all imports from China. Some economists estimate that the tariffs could shelve off up to two percentage points of China’s economic growth this year. As of today chances seem low that Beijing and Washington will negotiate a compromise anytime soon. The Chinese government is making preparations to further stimulate the economy. \nDuring our talk with Bert Hofman we will discuss the impact of the US tariffs on the Chinese economy and which measures the Chinese government could adopt to limit the downturn. \nAbout our speaker: Bert Hofman\, a Dutch national\, is the former director of the East Asian Institute of the National University Singapore and now professor at that institute. He was also a professor in practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of NUS. He is also a Senior Fellow at MERICS in Germany\, nonresident senior fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute\, and Member of the World Association for China Studies. Before joining NUS\, he worked with the World Bank for 27 years\, 22 of which in Asia\, and 12 of which on China. Mr. Hofman was the World Bank Country Director for China 2014-2019\, the country economist 2004-2008\, and the Chief Economist for the World Bank in the East Asia and Pacific region 2011-2014. His current interests include China’s future growth trajectory\, technology\, aging\, and geopolitics and China-US relations.

SUMMARY:FCCC Happy Hour Talk. CYCLING THE SILK ROAD. Traversing geopolitical spheres at the speed of life
DESCRIPTION:Slow down and join us for another edition of the FCCC “Happy Hour Talk”\, this time with Vera Regina van de Nieuwenhof\, an architectural historian active in the cultural field in the Netherlands and China. Vera has worked on Dutch cultural institutions such as Het Nieuwe Instituut until she took a sabbatical and cycled from Amsterdam to Tokyo in 2016. On the way\, she fell in love with Yunnan and decided to stay. Her Covid years were spent in Kunming and Dali\, as editor of GoKunming and initiator and curator of Dutch Culture Nights. More recently\, Vera has worked at the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Netherlands\, but will soon move back to Yunnan to work on a book. This is her goodbye from Beijing – for now. \nIn her talk\, Vera will look back at a different time – before Covid and trade wars rocked geopolitical fault lines. Her bicycle journey offers an alternative to the relentless news cycle of today. A slow paced reflection on traversing spheres of influence of historical and current empires\, feeling the gradual change of climate and landscape and connecting with countless people along the way.
