DESCRIPTION:Slow down and join us for another edition of the FCCC “Happy Hour Talk”\, this time with Vera Regina van de Nieuwenhof\, an architectural historian active in the cultural field in the Netherlands and China. Vera has worked on Dutch cultural institutions such as Het Nieuwe Instituut until she took a sabbatical and cycled from Amsterdam to Tokyo in 2016. On the way\, she fell in love with Yunnan and decided to stay. Her Covid years were spent in Kunming and Dali\, as editor of GoKunming and initiator and curator of Dutch Culture Nights. More recently\, Vera has worked at the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Netherlands\, but will soon move back to Yunnan to work on a book. This is her goodbye from Beijing – for now. \nIn her talk\, Vera will look back at a different time – before Covid and trade wars rocked geopolitical fault lines. Her bicycle journey offers an alternative to the relentless news cycle of today. A slow paced reflection on traversing spheres of influence of historical and current empires\, feeling the gradual change of climate and landscape and connecting with countless people along the way.
