DESCRIPTION:Guitarist from legendary band Tang Dynasty and cultural observer\, Kaiser Kuo unpacks the impact of music on China’s youth.\nHow did Beijing become a rock city? How has guitar music become the soundtrack of a culture in transition? And what is going on with the rock scene today?\nKnown for his writing on all things China\, Kaiser was there from the late 80s as a member of one of the bands that shaped what was to come. One of the most renowned China watchers of our time will join us in person to take you through the wild ride of rock China style. Kaiser will also share details about the plan to get back on the road with his other band\, Chunqiu (Spring & Autumn).\nSo come along and strap in.This is not a talk to miss. \nAbout our speaker: Kaiser Kuo is the host and co-founder of the Sinica Podcast\, the leading English-language podcast on current affairs in China. Sinica has been running with only a brief interruption since April 2010 and has published over 500 episodes featuring prominent diplomats\, political leaders\, academics\, journalists\, activists\, technologists\, and business people with expertise on China. Kaiser previously served as director of international communications for Baidu\, China’s leading search engine. Before that\, he served as director of international communications for Youku\, a leading Chinese internet video site. From 2004 to 2007\, he worked as a journalist and was China bureau chief for Red Herring magazine. Kaiser was editor-in-chief of the bilingual internet site ChinaNow.com from 1999 to 2002. He graduated in political science from the University of California\, Berkeley\, in 1988 and received a master’s degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Arizona in 1992. Kaiser was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the seminal Chinese heavy metal band Tang Dynasty\, founded in 1989; he returned to the U.S. for graduate school that year but rejoined the band from 1996 to 1999. From 2001 to 2016\, he played guitar in the Beijing-based heavy metal band Chunqiu (Spring & Autumn). He now lives in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina.
