DESCRIPTION:Dr. Clifford will introduce his latest book\, China’s Logistics: From Laggard to Innovator (Routledge 2025)\, which has just been launched in China as 中国物流。 从落后者到领 跑者 (by China Fortune Press) \nHis talk will start by explaining the challenges faced by China’s logistics and the multiple benefits that flow from their upgrading. He will highlight the Chinese government’s whole-of-nation approach in supporting and guiding this vital transformation. He will share perspectives on leading Chinese state-owned firms that have achieved world-class standards of service and on private Chinese firms that are using AI to innovate in e-commerce logistics. He will conclude with an assessment of the prospects for China’s logistics in the domestic market and in the international arena. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Paul G. Clifford is an External Associate at the Lau China Institute\, King’s College London and Honorary Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. He is President of the strategy advisors\, Paul G. Clifford & Associates. He first lived in China 1973-74 as a British exchange student. He later worked in China as a corporate banker with the First National Bank of Chicago\, in strategy consulting with Oliver Wyman\, and with Cisco Systems\, where he drove strategy on smart and connected cities. He has advised large-scale state-owned Chinese logistics firms on restructuring and strategy. He has consulted with multinational firms on their China market entry strategies in logistics and on general supply chain issues. He was elected as Executive Director of the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing.

Which alternative regions can European business turn to? Is China’s charm offensive in Europe working – and can China replace the U.S. as a trading partner and investor for European business? \nAbout the speaker: Jörg Wuttke is a Partner with the DGA Group and is based in Washington\, D.C. Until 2024\, Mr. Wuttke was Vice President of BASF China for 27 years. He served as President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) thrice\, and also as Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in China. Since its establishment in 2013\, Mr. Wuttke is member of the Advisory Board of Germany’s foremost China think tank Merics in Berlin. Kaiser will also share details about the plan to get back on the road with his other band\, Chunqiu (Spring & Autumn).\nSo come along and strap in.This is not a talk to miss. \nAbout our speaker: Kaiser Kuo is the host and co-founder of the Sinica Podcast\, the leading English-language podcast on current affairs in China. Sinica has been running with only a brief interruption since April 2010 and has published over 500 episodes featuring prominent diplomats\, political leaders\, academics\, journalists\, activists\, technologists\, and business people with expertise on China. Kaiser previously served as director of international communications for Baidu\, China’s leading search engine. Before that\, he served as director of international communications for Youku\, a leading Chinese internet video site. From 2004 to 2007\, he worked as a journalist and was China bureau chief for Red Herring magazine. Kaiser was editor-in-chief of the bilingual internet site ChinaNow.com from 1999 to 2002. He graduated in political science from the University of California\, Berkeley\, in 1988 and received a master’s degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Arizona in 1992. Kaiser was the co-founder and lead guitarist of the seminal Chinese heavy metal band Tang Dynasty\, founded in 1989; he returned to the U.S. for graduate school that year but rejoined the band from 1996 to 1999. From 2001 to 2016\, he played guitar in the Beijing-based heavy metal band Chunqiu (Spring & Autumn). He now lives in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. The long-run plan for the nation is to continue steady growth over the next 15 years and achieve a level of high income. \nChina’s leaders know\, however\, that they face a challenge in keeping growth moving. It is no secret that China’s inequality is one of the highest in the world. China’s leaders are clearly well informed of this challenge\, and\, in no small part in response to this challenge\, have launched a major new policy effort called Common Prosperity. \nWe believe that to develop an environment in China in which all residents will be able to enjoy the prosperity that the nation is moving towards\, the it is essential to include a major effort in the area of Early Childhood Development (ECD) … with the most a focus on the rural population. \nThis presentation’s main goal is to illustrate that Common Prosperity should begin by solving China’s biggest problem of it little people (young rural children). To do so\, we will have five specific objectives. First\, we will summarize the literature that shows that having a well-educated labor force is essential for helping a nation’s economy move from middle to high income. Second\, we will show that there is high inequality in the levels of education in China. The paper will illustrate how poor ECD outcomes are a very important reason underlying the poor levels of education in China’s rural schools. Third\, we will demonstrate that there is a serious problem of poor ECD outcomes across broad swaths of rural society. Fourth\, we will document that one of the major sources of this problem is the absence of psycho-stimulating inputs by caregivers to their young children. Finally\, we will document that there are clear solutions to these problems and conclude that the government needs to take rapid action to launch parental training programs across rural China in the very near future. \nTo meet these objectives\, we will draw on the findings of literature as well as data sets that have been collected by myself and my colleagues. These sources of information will provide high quality empirical evidence that will show that Common Prosperity should focus serious attention on rural families and provide them with the training and support so all rural children can grow up in an environment in which they can thrive. \nWe also have NEW SURVEY results reporting on the optimism/pessimism of both the rich and the poor in China … comparing three surveys in 2023 to surveys from 2004/2009/2014. \nAbout our speaker: Scott Rozelle holds the Helen Farnsworth Endowed Professorship at Stanford University and is Senior Fellow in the Freeman Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies and is Co-Director of the Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions (SCCEI). Professor Rozelle\, a development economist with a Ph.d. from Cornell University\, has worked on the economics of rural China for nearly 40 years. Currently\, his work focuses on human capital and China’s future growth and development\, including issues of rural health\, nutrition and education\, including early childhood development.

DESCRIPTION:Jörg Wuttke has been one of the most outspoken voices of the European business community in China. When it came to deficits and shortcomings of the investment climate in China he seldom minced his words. “Level playing field” and “equal treatment of local and foreign companies” became some of his most widely used terms. During the pandemic Jörg became one of the fiercest critics of the Zero-Covid policy. And his words rarely fell on deaf ears with the Chinese authorities. Government officials would listen to him and always treated him with respect. In his position Jörg also became an important mediator between the European business community in China and EU institutions in Brussels. After three stints as President of the EUCCC Jörg will step down on May 24th. After three decades of living and working in China he will leave the country in 2024. \nDuring the talk Jörg will look back on highs as well as on lows during his stay in China and will give his personal outlook for the economy of China\, where business for foreign companies has seldom been as difficult as it is today. \nAbout the speaker: Jörg Wuttke is President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China\, an office he has held already from 2007 to 2010\, and 2014 to 2017 and again since May 2019. From 2001 to 2004 Mr. Wuttke was the Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in China. Since its establishment in 2013\, Mr. Wuttke is member of the Advisory Board of Germany’s foremost Think Tank on China\, Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS)\, in Berlin. He lived in China for more than 30 years.

DESCRIPTION:China’s economy grew by 4\,5 % during the first quarter of the year\, stronger than most analysts had expected. The recovery was mainly driven by private consumption and an expansion of the service sector. But a closer look at the data reveals that a stable recovery of the Chinese economy is far from certain. Investment and production are still relatively weak and youth unemployment climbed to 19\,6 % in March\, which is an indicator of a still struggling private sector. Private enterprises account for roughly 80 % of urban employment. \nAndrew Batson will give us a deeper insight into China’s political economy and help us understand the dynamics of the Chinese economy in 2023. \nAbout the speaker: Andrew Batson is China Research Director at Gavekal Dragonomics. Andrew has worked extensively on the Chinese economy. Before joining Gavekal Dragonomics he worked as a reporter in Beijing and once served on the board of the FCCC.

The 1923 incident that is the subject of the book has implications for today\, including the use of hostage diplomacy for leverage against foreign governments\, the scourge of systemic corruption\, and the challenges of dealing with poverty and the widening economic divide. The same and similar issues that confronted those in power in 1923 continue to bedevil those in power today. \nJames\, has lived and worked in Beijing for over 25 years\, and previously served four terms as the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.
