SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk. What Trump’s Tariffs mean for Europe with Niclas Poitiers
DESCRIPTION:President Donald Trump’s tariffs clearly pose a profound challenge to the global rules-based trading system\, marking a huge shift after decades of multilateral trade liberalisation that had left tariffs at near-historic lows. The economic impact on the European Union is much less clear\, however. This talk will look at evidence on the possible economic effects of Trump’s tariffs for the EU and what this means for EU-China relations. \nAbout the Speaker: Niclas Frederic Poitiers is a Research Fellow at the Brussels based economics think tank Bruegel. He researches topics in International Trade\, Global Supply Chains and Industrial Policy. Niclas writes extensively on the geopolitical aspects of international trade and how shifts in global politics reshape supply chains. In recent years\, his research focused on semiconductor policy\, critical raw materials\, tech sanctions and economic security more broadly. \nHe holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Universitat de Barcelona\, where he was also adjunct Lecturer in Economics\, a M.Sc. in Economics from Bonn University\, and a B.Sc. from University of Mannheim. He was a visiting scholar at Northwestern University. He joined Bruegel in September 2019 and is since autumn of 2023 the manager of Bruegel’s team of Research Assistants.

SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk. The Party's Interests Come First - The Life of Xi Zhongxun\, Father of Xi Jinping: a biography by Joseph Torigian
DESCRIPTION:Much can be learned\, about both Xi Jinping and the nature of the party he leads from the memory and legacy of his father\, the revolutionary Xi Zhongxun (1913–2002). The elder Xi served the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for more than seven decades. He worked at the right hand of prominent leaders Zhou Enlai and Hu Yaobang. Drawing on an array of new documents\, interviews\, diaries\, and periodicals\, Joseph Torigian vividly tells the life story of Xi Zhongxun\, a man who spent his entire life struggling to balance his own feelings with the Party’s demands. Through the eyes of Xi Jinping’s father\, Torigian reveals the extraordinary organizational\, ideological\, and coercive power of the CCP—and the terrible cost in human suffering that comes with it. \nAbout the Speaker: Joseph Torigian is Associate Professor at the School of International Service at American University and a Research Fellow at the Hoover History Lab at Stanford University.

SUMMARY:FCCC In-person Talk. Queer China
DESCRIPTION:Always wondered what it is like to be queer in China today? Our speaker\, a Chinese national who prefers not to be named here\, is an active member of the queer community with a long and rich experience in protecting queer rights\, in organising activities for queers and in fostering a better understanding of this community in China. He has an extensive network inside and outside of China. \nHe will talk about the situation for queer people in China today. Is it\, for instance\, easier for young people to come out of the closet today than it was ten years ago? How many people actually tell their parents they are queer? What happens if you come out at your workplace? \nAlso discussed will be how the tolerance of the government for NGO’s active in this field has diminished in recent years\, and what that has meant for the community. How do you protect your rights under such circumstances? What is still possible and where do you focus on? \nOffline only

SUMMARY:FCCC In-person Talk. Should I stay or should I go? European business challenges in China in times of populism
DESCRIPTION:The Trumpian trade war is shaking up global markets. While tariffs may ebb and flow\, both the U.S. and China (and other parts of the world) are prone to employ a higher level of trade barriers than previously. Export controls and self-reliance policies are remaking supply chains. European business finds itself between a rock and a hard place: increasingly shut out of the American market while facing ever stiffer competition from China. Which alternative regions can European business turn to? Is China’s charm offensive in Europe working – and can China replace the U.S. as a trading partner and investor for European business? \nAbout the speaker: Jörg Wuttke is a Partner with the DGA Group and is based in Washington\, D.C. Until 2024\, Mr. Wuttke was Vice President of BASF China for 27 years. He served as President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) thrice\, and also as Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in China. Since its establishment in 2013\, Mr. Wuttke is member of the Advisory Board of Germany’s foremost China think tank Merics in Berlin. He lived in China for more than 35 years. \nThis is an in-person event. Light refreshments will be served.

Against this backdrop\, renowned economist Alicia Garcia-Herrero will offer a timely analysis of what’s at stake\, interpreting the upcoming economic data\, the potential implications of the deal and what these developments could mean for China’s trajectory and the broader global economy. \nAbout the Speaker: Alicia García-Herrero is the Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at the French investment bank Natixis\, based in Hong Kong. SUMMARY:FCCC Online Event: How China’s economic engagement ended US primacy in Latin America by Francisco Urdinez
DESCRIPTION:With the US administration’s desire to ensure the « Western Hemisphere » is politically on its side and recent military action to remove Nicolas Maduro\, Latin America is at the center of the rivalry between the United States and China. But Washington may find out Beijing already has displaced it in many aspects of the trade and economic relations with the region\, and gained political ground. Join us for a discussion with Francisco Urdinez\, who just published Economic Displacement – China and the End of US Primacy in Latin America. \nAbout the Speaker: Francisco Urdinez is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Political Science of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile\, where he also directs the Millennium Nucleus for the Impacts of China in Latin America (ICLAC) project on China’s impacts in Latin America. Through data analysis and case studies\, he demonstrates how China has filled the economic void left by US retrenchment from 2001 to 2020. He argues that this economic shift has led to a significant erosion of US political influence in the region\, affecting public opinion\, elite perspective\, and voting patterns in international organizations.
