DESCRIPTION:Does the PRC’s multimodal engagement with African media promote decolonization or its media propaganda? Drawing on copious interviews with journalists from across the continent\, and complementing these with detailed analysis of secondary data\, Emeka Umejei explores this question through China’s ever-growing expansion of training\, content-sharing\, and formal media coordination initiatives across Africa.\n\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Emeka Umejei has taught at institutions across the continent\, including the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa\, the American University of Nigeria\, and the University of Ghana. He has also held research positions at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University of Tubingen in Germany. His first book Chinese Media in Africa: Perception\, Performance\, and Paradox (2020) received wide acclaim. Prior to entering academia\, Dr. Umejei served as a journalist for several years\, writing for leading newspapers in Nigeria\, including the Independent and Leadership. He also served as an African correspondent for U.S.-based media outfit LNG Publications. A former Reagan Fascell Democracy (Scholarly Track) at the National Endowment for Democracy(NED) in Washington DC\, Umejei coordinates research at the Centre for Analysis of Authoritarian Influence in Africa (CAAIA). He holds a master’s degree in journalism and media studies from Rhodes University in Grahamstown\, South Africa\, and a PhD in journalism and media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg\, South Africa.

But Beijing’s growing influence has also generated an unexpected response: grassroots resistance\, public distrust\, and anti-China protests across the region.\nDrawing on more than a decade of fieldwork\, Bradley Jardine and Edward Lemon examine how China’s expanding presence is experienced on the ground—and why Beijing’s influence is far more contested and fragile than conventional accounts often suggest. Their book\, Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia\, reveals a China that miscalculates\, alienates local communities\, encounters political and social constraints\, and is increasingly forced to adapt its approach to local expectations. \n\nEdward Lemon. Research Assistant Professor at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and president of the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs. He previously held a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University and earned his PhD from the University of Exeter. He is co-author of Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia (Oxford University Press\, 2025)\, and his research focuses on China and Russia’s relations with Central Asia\, authoritarian governance\, security\, religion\, and migration. \nBradley Jardine. Managing Director of the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs and a former Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. A former foreign correspondent based in Moscow\, Beijing\, and the South Caucasus\, he has spent the past decade researching China’s growing influence and its implications for international security and human rights. He is co-author of Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia and a leading expert on transnational repression\, particularly China’s repression of Uyghurs abroad.
