SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk. Backlash: China's Struggle for Influence in Central Asia
DESCRIPTION:China has emerged as one of Central Asia’s most important investors\, creditors\, and security partners since the collapse of the Soviet Union. But Beijing’s growing influence has also generated an unexpected response: grassroots resistance\, public distrust\, and anti-China protests across the region.\nDrawing on more than a decade of fieldwork\, Bradley Jardine and Edward Lemon examine how China’s expanding presence is experienced on the ground—and why Beijing’s influence is far more contested and fragile than conventional accounts often suggest. Their book\, Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia\, reveals a China that miscalculates\, alienates local communities\, encounters political and social constraints\, and is increasingly forced to adapt its approach to local expectations. \n\nEdward Lemon. Research Assistant Professor at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and president of the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs. He previously held a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University and earned his PhD from the University of Exeter. He is co-author of Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia (Oxford University Press\, 2025)\, and his research focuses on China and Russia’s relations with Central Asia\, authoritarian governance\, security\, religion\, and migration. \nBradley Jardine. Managing Director of the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs and a former Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. A former foreign correspondent based in Moscow\, Beijing\, and the South Caucasus\, he has spent the past decade researching China’s growing influence and its implications for international security and human rights. He is co-author of Backlash: China’s Struggle for Influence in Central Asia and a leading expert on transnational repression\, particularly China’s repression of Uyghurs abroad.

SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk: How to Win a Trade War: Insights for the Next Trump-Xi meeting
DESCRIPTION:China vs the U.S.\, Europe vs China\, and even the U.S. vs Europe – trade wars have become a defining feature of the relationships of the world’s major powers. \nIn Busan last year\, the U.S. and China agreed to a truce and put the public version of their trade war on hold. When China’s president Xi Jinping visits the U.S. later this month\, this fragile truce comes into focus again. Will it be extended? And if yes\, who dictates the terms? What parts of the trade war continue to simmer below the surface? \nTime to step back and reflect. What does history tell us about trade wars? Which strategies have worked and which have failed? Who is in a better position to win this time round? And who has used the truce better to improve his negotiation position? \nAbout the speaker: Chad Bown is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Previously\, he served as chief economist at the US Department of State in the Biden-Harris administration\, as senior economist in the White House on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and worked for the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. He is the host of the podcast Trade Talks and most recently\, together with Soumaya Keynes\, co-author of the book “How to Win a Trade War”.

SUMMARY:FCCC Online Talk. Broken China: How the Economic Miracle Shattered and What it Means for the World
DESCRIPTION:Economic competition between the United States and China has been a defining issue of the twenty-first century. But after years of rapid growth\, China’s economy has faltered. How did its long-term economic outlook change so quickly? And can Beijing change course and preserve China’s political ambition for global economic primacy?\nIn his new book Broken China\, Logan Wright offers an unflinching account of how China’s economy hit the wall. He argues that China’s economic slowdown is rooted in its financial system\, and an unprecedented credit expansion finally coming to an end. Opposing the prevailing myth that its leaders think and plan many years ahead\, this book posits that there was no long-term plan that included the credit boom and bust that now constrains Beijing’s options. Rather than crisis or collapse\, Wright argues\, China is suffering from a decay of its economic policy tools. As its domestic and foreign sectors face increasing pressure\, the last thing Beijing needs is global pushback against Chinese exports. With no clear path to recovery\, China’s economy is broken\, the consequences of which will reverberate around the world. \nAbout the Speaker: Logan Wright is a partner at Rhodium Group and leads the firm’s work on the Chinese economy and its impact on the world. He is also a senior associate of the Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Before that\, he lived in Hong Kong and Beijing for over two decades.

SUMMARY:FCCC In-Person Talk: China and the Global Economic Order by K. Gallagher and G. Chin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book talk of China and the Global Economic Order\, by Gregory T. Chin and Kevin P. Gallagher\, published by Cambridge University Press in its Global China series. The authors trace how China has transformed its role within and outside of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs)\, from a “rule-taker” to a “rule-shaker” and ultimately a “rule-maker” by shaping new financial institutions such as the AIIB and the New Development Bank. Through the concept of “two-way countervailing power\,” Chin and Gallagher show how China’s actions\, together with other countries of the BRICS+ and Global South\, are reshaping the norms\, rules\, policies and practices of global monetary and financial governance\, and provoking new responses from Western powers. \nKevin P. Gallagher is the Director of Boston University Global Development Policy Center and a Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. He advises global policy on climate\, debt\, and development\, including as Lead Expert on Multilateral Development Bank Reform for Brazil’s G20 Presidency. He co-chairs initiatives on green debt relief and Belt and Road sustainability and has served on U.S. and international advisory bodies. A prolific author\, he has written eight books\, with his latest ‘China and the Global Economic Order’ published in Cambridge University Press. \nGregory T. Chin is Associate Professor of Political Science/Political Economy at York University\, Canada\, and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center\, and of the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins University\, School of Advanced International Studies. He is the Co-Director of the Emerging Global Governance (EGG) Project at Global Policy journal online\, with Dr. Eva-Maria Nag. He has published widely on the international and comparative political economy of China\, Asia\, the BRICS and international money and global finance. He is on the advisory or editorial boards of the journal Review of International Political Economy\, Global Governance\, and The Journal of East Asian Studies. Before joining York University\, Dr. Chin worked in the Government of Canada from 2000-2007\, in Ottawa at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency from 2000-2003\, and as First Secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing from 2003-2006.

SUMMARY:FCCC In person Talk. The Rise of China’s Electric Vehicle Industry: Strategic Alliances Between Local Governments and Private Capital by Fengming Lu
DESCRIPTION:China’s EV boom wasn’t simply top-down state planning—it emerged from strategic alliances between local governments\, shut out of SOE-dominated joint ventures\, and nimble private automakers like BYD\, Geely\, and NIO. Drawing on over sixty interviews and years of fieldwork\, author Fengming Lu reveals how these local-private partnerships—from Chery’s 1990s origins to Hefei’s rescue of NIO—propelled private firms past state champions and reshaped China’s industrial geography. \nAbout the Speaker: Fengming Lu is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Political and Social Change\, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University. His research covers political economy of China\, elite politics\, political selection\, and local governments. As a close observer of the Chinese automotive industry for 30 years\, Fengming is working on a book project on political economy of the booming electric vehicle (EV) industry in China\, focusing on roles of central industrial policies\, local governments’ developmental strategies\, and the global capital market.
