When China’s president Xi Jinping visits the U.S. later this month\, this fragile truce comes into focus again. Will it be extended? And if yes\, who dictates the terms? What parts of the trade war continue to simmer below the surface? \nTime to step back and reflect. What does history tell us about trade wars? Which strategies have worked and which have failed? Who is in a better position to win this time round? And who has used the truce better to improve his negotiation position? \nAbout the speaker: Chad Bown is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Previously\, he served as chief economist at the US Department of State in the Biden-Harris administration\, as senior economist in the White House on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and worked for the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. He is the host of the podcast Trade Talks and most recently\, together with Soumaya Keynes\, co-author of the book “How to Win a Trade War”.

DESCRIPTION:China’s own Constitution recognizes and protects press freedoms – but the reality is very different as many in the FCCC community are aware. Join us for an interactive discussion with media lawyer (and current chairman of AmCham China) James Zimmerman\, a partner in the office of international law firm Loeb and Loeb LLP\, in a discussion regarding how best to manage risks and thrive in China’s foreign media environment. James will be joined by his colleague Ms. Jiamu Sun of Loeb and Loeb LLP. \nJames Zimmerman is a seasoned lawyer with more than four decades of experience. Based in Beijing since 1998\, James advises foreign companies on corporate\, transactional\, regulatory\, litigation and white-collar criminal defense matters. James has extensive experience assisting individuals detained and prosecuted under China’s broad and ambiguous national security and state secrecy laws and regulations\, including several high-profile and politically sensitive cases. He represents foreign media—including print\, broadcast\, and social media—in addressing the challenges related to security\, press freedoms and general operations in China. He is currently in his fifth term as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China. \nJiamu Sun focuses her practice on representing foreign companies and individuals in cross-border dispute resolution proceedings\, white-collar defense proceedings\, administrative defense cases\, collection and enforcement of secured interest rights\, internal ethics investigations\, and general commercial litigation. She has particular experience in data privacy and security issues\, national security\, e-commerce\, media law and regulatory compliance. Jiamu often provides legal support for foreign news organizations and journalists in China in security and regulatory matters\, as well as defending claims of libel/defamation and invasion of privacy.
