Our very own Anna Fifield has a book about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un coming out on June 11: The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un. In a starred review, Kirkus called the book “a compelling mix of biography, cultural history, and political intrigue.” It is already out in Korean and editions in eight other languages – including German, Dutch, Russian and traditional Chinese – are in process.

Anna will give members and members-to-be a preview of the book and talk about her experiences covering North Korea for eight years, from 2004-2008 for the Financial Times and then from 2014 to last year for the Post. Anna has been to North Korea a dozen times and has interviewed scores of escapees, in China, Thailand, Laos and of course, South Korea.
She will talk about what she learned about Kim Jong Un and How he has managed to defy the odds and remain the leader of North Korea. She will also talk about the challenges of interviewing escapees and offer advice on how to approach and overcome these challenges.
Anna has been the Beijing bureau chief for The Washington Post since September last year, moving from Tokyo, where she covered Japan and the Koreas. She started as a journalist in her home country of New Zealand, then worked for the Financial Times for 13 years, including as a correspondent in Seoul, Tehran, Beirut and Washington, D.C.
