Le Sang de la Chine is a book about Henan’s massive HIV/Aids contamination of tens of thousands of this chinese province’s poorest peasants. This book is the result of four years of regular, often eventful visits to Henan’s Aids villages, of meetings with many actors of this tragedy, and access to some key information about an attempt to cover-up a massive health disaster. The large-scale infection of Henanese peasants with HIV is without parallel anywhere in the world, the author argues. It classifies as one of the greatest scandals of the global AIDS epidemic since the disease first appeared more than 20 years ago. The book makes the point that HIV in Henan is intricately tied up with the transformation of China over the past two decades and the emergence of a market economy that, the author argues, has so often just become a free-for-all. Published in France, it’s already scheduled to have chinese (Taiwan), korean, japanese and italian editions, and a US edition is still under discussion. The book includes 24 photographs from french photographer Bertrand Meunier, who will be present at the event.
