On Feb. 16, 2019, the FCCC submitted a brief to the UN Special Rapporteur on state surveillance of journalists in China in response to a public call for submissions about the surveillance industry and human rights. The brief summarized the FCCC’s media freedoms report’s focus on rapidly expanding surveillance in China and government interference with reporting, as well as an overview of a couple global companies making it easier for the government to surveil sources. The UN Special Rapporteur is expected to compile public comments on this issue for a report to the General Assembly in October 2019.
