Taiwan: a diplomatic power in its own right

It’s been common over the years to speak of Taiwan’s isolation on the world stage. Today, only 15 countries formally recognize the Republic of China, a number that’s been steadily dwindling over the years. But in his latest paper, Antoine Bondaz argues that Taiwan is actually a diplomatic power in its own right. To support this argument he points to Taipei’s far-reaching diplomatic network (the 31st largest in the world), it’s high-level of visibility as well as its dynamic, multi-faceted diplomacy. The ROC’s message can be heard in the halls of parliament houses around the world as well as on social media.

Antoine Bondaz, of the “Fondation pour la recherche stratégique” in Paris, is the head of the Taiwan program for security and diplomacy. His research focuses on China’s foreign policy and security as well as that of Taiwan and the Koreas. He’s one of the most vocal China-focused academics in France today, making numerous appearances in the media as well as having an active presence on social media. The latter has led the Chinese embassy in Paris as well as state media to single him out for criticism and insults.
