This year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. Since normalization, China has become one of Japan’s largest trade partners, but also, an increasing source of geopolitical friction. Professor Kanehara Nobukatsu joins the FCCC to break down the grand design of Japan’s strategy toward China. As the former Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Secretary-general of National Security Secretariat(NSS) , Professor Kanehara will share some of his experience during his time serving Prime-minister Abe Shinzo.

About our speaker: Prof Kanehara is a career diplomat, with nearly 40 years of experience. He served as Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Secretary-general of NSS starting in 2014 to his retirement in 2019. Professor Kanehara currently teaches diplomatic history and international relations at Doshisha University. He recently published a book called “Japan’s Grand Strategy towards China” in Japanese.
