Join us on November 9th, for Decoding Chinese Elite Politicsa talk from the renowned scholar of elite Chinese politics, Joseph Torigian. Torigian is an assistant professor at the School of International Service at American University in Washington, DC.

In this talk, he will provide an overview of what outside observers have gotten right and wrong about Chinese elite politics and why.

Torigian studies the politics of authoritarian regimes with a specific focus on elite power struggles, civil-military relations, and grand strategy. His scholarship focuses on Russia and China and he is working on a much anticipated biography of Xi Zhongxun, father of Xi Jinping. He has pursued his research at Princeton-Harvard’s China and the World Program; Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation; George Washington University’s Institute for Security and Conflict Studies; the Higher School of Economics in Moscow as well as Fudan University. He has a PhD from MIT and BA from University of Michigan.
